Supplying lead firms, intangible assets and power in global value chains: Explaining governance in the fertilizer chain

چکیده
Global suppliers of agricultural inputs such as seeds, fertilizers and agrochemicals exert increasing degrees power in global value chains (GVCs). Although the GVC literature has explained how buyers govern GVCs from buying-end, question achieve governance supplying-end remains underexplored. We address this gap by combining a multidimensional typology with on intangible assets. argue that assets are crucial resources for to morph otherwise ungovernable supply undifferentiated input commodities into more sophisticated governable GVCs. illustrate our argument case fertilizer supplier, YARA International. YARA's asset investments were instrumental governing chain integration Tanzanian smallholder farmers. They allowed than bargaining (demonstrative, institutional constitutive power) effectively position itself supplying lead firm Tanzania's agro-industrial GVC.

The Governance of Global Value Chains
This article builds a theoretical framework to help explain governance patterns in global value chains. It draws on three streams of literature – transaction costs economics, production networks, and technological capability and firm-level learning – to identify three variables that play a large role in determining how global value chains are governed and change. These are: (1) the complexity o...

متن کاملDerivative Ideas and the Value of Intangible Assets∗
We build a general equilibrium model in which growth is driven by two invention types: fundamental ideas that cause creative destruction, and derivative ideas that enhance the value of existing inventions. The model provides a new mapping from microeconomic, patent data to aggregate TFP growth and the aggregate value of privately owned knowledge. We show how to measure the frequency of derivati...
متن کاملComplementary Innovations and the Value of Intangible Assets
We build a general equilibrium model where growth is driven by new ideas that can have varying degrees of complementarity with previous innovations. The model links micro-level complementarities with the aggregate value of intangible capital and provides a new mapping between measures of knowledge accumulation found in patent data and aggregate TFP growth. We show how to measure the degree of c...
